Why is my Chlorine Disappearing?

You test your water, add chlorine, and check again a day later only to find it’s nearly gone. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. One of the most common questions we hear at Beninati Pool & Spa is: “Why does my chlorine keep disappearing?” The answer usually comes down to two things: chlorine demand and UV burn-off. Understanding both will help you keep your water clean, safe, and balanced whether you have a backyard pool or a hot tub on your deck.

 

What Is Chlorine Demand?

 

Chlorine demand refers to the amount of chlorine your water needs to consume before it can reach a free, active level that actually sanitizes. Think of it like this: your water may have a “backlog” of contaminants it needs to burn through before your chlorine can do its job protecting swimmers or soakers.

 

Common causes of high chlorine demand include:

  • Algae even invisible early-stage algae consumes chlorine rapidly
  • Body oils, lotions, sweat, and cosmetics introduced by bathers
  • Organic debris such as leaves, pollen, dirt, and grass
  • Combined chlorine (chloramines) a byproduct of chlorine reacting with ammonia and nitrogen compounds that locks up your free chlorine
  • Imbalanced water chemistry, particularly high pH or high cyanuric acid (stabilizer) levels, which make chlorine less effective
  • Biofilm buildup in hot tubs a slimy layer of bacteria that hides in plumbing and jets and is very difficult to sanitize

 

Chlorine Demand in Pools

 

In a swimming pool, chlorine demand often spikes after heavy use, a rainstorm, or periods of neglect. If you’ve ever added a large amount of chlorine only to test the water the next morning and find it reads zero, you’ve experienced chlorine demand firsthand. The fix is a process called shocking adding a large dose of chlorine (or non-chlorine oxidizer) to overwhelm the demand and restore free chlorine to a usable level. It’s best done at dusk or night to get the most out of your treatment.

 

Chlorine Demand in Hot Tubs

 

Hot tubs are especially vulnerable to chlorine demand because of the high water temperature, small water volume, and the concentration of bather load. A single person soaking in a hot tub introduces significantly more organic material per gallon than in a full-sized pool. Biofilm is also a major concern in hot tubs if you’re consistently fighting chlorine disappearance, it may be time for a full drain, clean, and refill, along with a plumbing flush using a product like Jet Blaster.

 

What Is UV Burn-Off?

 

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun destroy chlorine molecules quickly a process called photodegradation. Unstabilized chlorine (like liquid chlorine or cal hypo) can lose a lot its effectiveness within just a few hours of direct sunlight exposure. This is why outdoor pools in Michigan’s sunny summer months can go through chlorine so quickly even when bather load is low.

 

UV Burn-Off in Pools

 

The solution for pools is cyanuric acid (CYA), also known as chlorine stabilizer or conditioner. CYA acts like sunscreen for your chlorine, bonding to it and protecting it from UV rays. Ideal CYA levels for an outdoor pool are typically between 30–50 ppm. Too little and your chlorine burns off too fast. Too much (over 80–100 ppm) and your chlorine becomes ineffective from a condition sometimes called “chlorine lock.”

 

A few tips for managing UV burn-off in pools:

  • Shock at night so the treatment has time to work before sun exposure
  • Test CYA levels at the start of each season and after heavy rainfall
  • Consider adding a solar cover to reduce UV exposure and evaporation

 

UV Burn-Off in Hot Tubs

 

Most hot tubs have a cover, which helps significantly with UV protection when not in use. However, if your hot tub is uncovered during the day or if you’re using it frequently with the cover off, UV exposure can still contribute to chlorine loss. Unlike pools, hot tubs generally should NOT use CYA as a stabilizer the high water temperature and smaller volume can cause CYA to build up quickly and throw off your water balance. Instead, focus on keeping your cover on when the tub is not in use and maintaining consistent sanitation habits.

 

How to Fix Disappearing Chlorine

 

Whether you have a pool or a hot tub, the approach to solving disappearing chlorine is similar: identify the root cause, treat it, and then maintain a consistent routine to prevent it from coming back.

 

Step 1: Test your water thoroughly.

Don’t just test free chlorine also test pH, total alkalinity, CYA (pools), and combined chlorine. Combined chlorine above 0.5 ppm is a sign of chloramine buildup, which means it’s time to shock.

 

Step 2: Shock your water.

For pools, use a quality cal-hypo or non-chlorine shock. For hot tubs, use a hot tub-specific shock product. Shocking breaks down chloramines and burns through organic demand, giving your chlorine a fresh start.

 

Step 3: Balance your water chemistry.

Make sure pH (7.4–7.6), total alkalinity (80–120 ppm), and calcium hardness are all in range. Chlorine works best in balanced water. High pH is one of the most common reasons chlorine underperforms.

 

Step 4: For hot tubs consider a full drain and refill.

Hot tubs should be drained and refilled every 3–4 months depending on usage. If you’re constantly fighting chlorine demand, a fresh start with clean water and a pipe flush is often the most effective solution.

 

Step 5: Establish a maintenance routine.

Consistent, small doses of chlorine are far more effective than infrequent large ones. Test your water at least 2–3 times per week for pools and before each use for hot tubs. A regular routine prevents demand from building up in the first place.
